First off create a new document, I'll be using the size 493x389.

Fill the canvas with white, and make a new layer.
Now take the elliptical marquee tool and hold Shift to make a perfect circle like so.

Fill the selection with the color #a51111.
You should now have something like this:

Now right click on the layer, and select 'Blending Options'.
Select Inner Glow, and use these settings.

You should now have something like this:

Now right click on this layer and click "Convert to Smart Object", then right click again on the layer and select "Rasterize Layer". Now right click again and select 'Blending Options'.
Select Inner Glow and use these settings.

What all this does is create more of a 3d aspect. It helps a lot later on in the tutorial.

Now we're going to give it a dark flare, which will help the 3d aspect a lot later on as well.

Make a new layer.
Select the Elliptical Marquee tool again and make a selection like this:

Now fill this selection with black and set the layer style to "Overlay" at 10% Opacity.

You should now have something like this:

Now grab the Elliptical Marquee tool again and make a selection like below:

Now fill this selection with black, and set the layer style to "Overlay" at 10% Opacity.

You should now have something like this:

Now hit 'B' on your keyboard and reset your brushes.
Now change your foreground color to white.
Select a 65 pixel soft round brush and click where I have the brush shown below:

You should now have something like this:

Now here's the tricky part, and where it will require a steady hand.

First, make a new layer.
Select the Elliptical Marquee tool and make a circle the size of your orb.

You should have made a circle like this:

Now select the gradient tool and make a black to transparent gradient like below:

Now (with the gradient tool selected) make a line going from the bottom left, to the top right like below:

Note: Make SURE you do not de-select your elliptical marquee selection!

Now set this layer to 70% Opacity.
Now, with the circle still selected, make a new layer, and select the gradient tool.
Make a white to transparent gradient like below:

Now (with the gradient tool selected) make a line going from the top right, to the bottom left like below:

Set this layer to 'Overlay' at 40% Opacity.
You should now have something similar to this:

Now this is the part that makes the stone ball look like.. stone.
Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue/Saturation. And use these settings:

You should now have something like the below image:

I actually forgot to explain how to add a shadow earlier in the tutorial, so I will explain it here.

To add a shadow: Make a new layer directly above the white BG layer. And make a selection like this:

Now right click inside the selection and click 'Feather'.
Use 20 pixels for the feather radius. Now fill the selection with black.

You should now have something like this:

And you're done, add some grunge brushing, and you should have something like this:
