 Simple Star Field
« Thread Started on Jan 29, 2007, 9:05pm »

To start of our star feild, open up a 500x500 document. In your layer's palette click new layer and title it small stars, and fill this with #000000 (pure black).

The go Filter--->Noise--->Add Noise and use these settings:

Now lets get some bigger stars by duplicating the Small Stars layer. Re-title the copied layer Big Stars.

Now, you may have noticed that this doesn't really do much to make it look any different. This is where a little skill and intuition come into it.

Go to Image--->Adjustments--->Levels and now we are going to play with the levels of the big stars layer. Everytime you do this, it will be different but my levels looked like this.

Now set the big stars layer blending mode to Overlay and then merge it down (Ctrl+E).

Now, create a new layer and call it Clouds. Press D to reset your color palette to #000000 and #FFFFFF. Then go Filter--->Render--->Clouds. Now, this is where it depends on you. If you want alot of stars have alot of white or lighter tones in your clouds, if you want hardly any stars, go for darker tones. Because of we are going to do next the lighter will show stars and the darker will hide them.

I like having alot of stars in mine so this is what mine looked like.

Now with our clouds layer selected go to your blending options and set the blending mode to Color Dodge. Some of the stars might look a little bright. if yours looked like this follow onto the next few steps. If your's didnt then you have made your first star feild.

Now, for those whose stars turned out brighter than what they wanted. Here if what we do.

My stars turned out like that. Now go to Image--->Adjustments--->Levels and fiddle with the levels on your stars layer until you get something like this.

Basically the way it works is that by moving the little grey triangle towards the left will bring you the bigger stars. Moving it to the right will make them go away.

Moving the little white triangle towards the right will bring up the smaller stars, and moving it left will make them go away.

Congratulations on completing your star feild. If you enjoyed this tutorial please sign up to the forums.

Thanks for submitting sven.
This should continue the tutorial on a complete terragen space image.

I'll work on a nebula tutorial soon, that'll help everyone here alot, as it's one of the main things.
