Insert the correct numbers etc. The black bars don't HAVE to build up like that, it might be slightly different.
Also make sure you've added the right amount of noise.

You filled it with black, then proceeded to go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise and used his settings?

you are placing the noise on the same layer? That can be disasterous if you arent.

Ah, try using "Guassian" as your Noise setting. Should fix it.
Also make sure you add noise on the same layer, as sven said.

You're too amazing for me. I just wanted to do the planet and stars, the nebula wouldn't work for me so I just gave up.

Not a bad attempt, make a few stars a bit more brighter next time as you can hardly see them

It was great until the part with the shadow. Some how or another, my planet wasn't blue and the shadow covered a lot more than usual.
Oh well, excellent effort!

Select the part of the shadow you want to erase using the elliptical marquee tool, feather it 15px and hit delete.

Well, new to all of this. Here's my shot at it. I decided to make it a full graphic as oppsed to a sig. Also, using another tutorial on how to create a fake map, I created a planet with land masses (no it's not a picture of the earth). I used different tectures for the land a for the oceans and did a bunch of color effects on them. I used a stock shot of clouds for the atmosphere. I also had a hard time creating the nebula, so on that, I cheated and used a Hubble picture of a real one... Enjoy!
